One to watch: Grace Stewart

For the next installment of One to watch, we headed to Norwich (not literally), to meet Grace Stewart, a Music performance student, who recently completed the One Month Album Challenge. We wanted to find out more about her and if she managed to complete her challenge.

Tell us about yourself

My name is Gracie, I’m a 17 year old musician based in Norwich. I’m an avid birdwatcher and cassette collector! Most of my spare time is spent either making music, writing letters. I have 26 penpals (BBC Norfolk actually wrote an article about it, it’s a fun little read https://bbc.in/3iSXd8x), or listening to super tacky 80s tunes.

Why did you decide to study at ACC?

I’m currently in my last year of the Level 3 Music Performance course. There are lots of reasons why ACC stood out to me; after visiting the Norwich campus I felt it was truly the ideal college for me. The tutors and staff were all so accommodating and helpful, the atmosphere of the centre was incredibly welcoming and creative; and the wonderful facilities available really made me want to study there.

Tell us about the One Month Hour Challenge

The premise of the project is that you have to write, record and release an entire album within a month; It’s open to anyone and if you complete it in time you get your album on the website [onemonthalbum.com]. Making my one month album Party Favours was such a rollercoaster of an experience! It was such a great opportunity to allow myself to just create without being so critical of my process; being under such tight time constraints meant I had to improvise a lot and explore new ideas and genres. Looking back there’s a lot I would have done differently but I’m extremely amazed by what I managed to create; as someone who’s never really done much production or sound engineering I taught myself a lot of new skills through this process that I’m definitely going to continue to improve upon. The next OMA project is in August, I’m definitely planning on doing it again!

What other projects have you been working on?

Over quarantine I’ve been working on a little EP; However I’m taking my time with this one!! I’ve been trying to develop and define my sound as a musician. Doing the one month album really helped me realise that I want to do a lot more 80s influenced dream pop type of music; so that’s something that I’m exploring more within this EP. I’m planning on progressing to the Artist Development course here at the Norwich campus next term which I’m very excited about! I think it’s going to be a wonderful opportunity for me to develop my sound, image and skills as a musician even further. But for now I’m going to continue to keep myself busy trying to juggle all of these musical projects haha!
