course overview

The Music Performance and Technology course is designed to give you a great start on your musical journey. We provide a taste of all the elements of working as a producer, performer, composer or instrumentalist, in a highly creative and supportive learning environment. Our high-tech facilities and experienced staff provide a learning experience which prepares you for the next stages of your education and musical journey.

By the end of the year, you will have developed a foundation of musical skills and knowledge and should have a clear idea of your next steps and your direction through music and education, allowing you to choose the specific musical pathway you follow next.

  • Learn a variety of musical skills and knowledge throughout the year to give you a solid start in the essential areas of music performance, composition and technology.
  • Develop skills in composing, producing and recording music (helping you develop your songwriting or production ability)
  • Improve your skills over time on an instrument of your choice (including keyboards or software controllers for those who are interested in music production)
  • Learn how to record and edit audio, so you can record your own material or add to your music productions.
  • Work on projects of your own design, such as performance groups/bands and/or compositions and productions.
Work with your peers to organise and carry out a musical event of your design.
  • Learn about the music industry: how to earn money; how to analyse the music of others; how your favourite artists influence your own sound and style; and how music styles and scenes develop over time and are affected by things such as technology and history.
  • Learn more about your personal health and wellbeing, and develop professional skills to prepare you for your next steps in life and education.

By the time you finish your course, you should have a clear idea of your next steps in music and education and have the skills and knowledge you need to succeed at the next level.

You and your peers will all have different skills and ambitions within music, so in all your lessons, you and your peers can learn from and inspire each other in new and interesting ways, as well as form performance groups or composition teams. The modern musician needs a range of experience, skills and knowledge, so studying these on the course will give you a strong start in your musical journey.

This course caters for a wide range of musical experiences and disciplines, whilst allowing you to focus on the genres and styles that inspire you.

By the end of the course, you will be in a strong position to choose the best Level 3 pathway to suit you, your skills and interests.

Three or more GCSEs at grade 3 or above, including English (Language or Literature).

This course is internally assessed, meaning your teachers deliver and assess all of your coursework. The year is currently made up of 7 assignment submissions. Projects are a balance of practical work like compositions, audio recordings and videoed performances; reports and presentations.

We will work with you to build your skills from the ground up, and we can provide you with all the gear you need, but before you start with us, it would be beneficial for you to do the following:

  • Develop skills on an instrument if possible. For those who are more interested in production, keyboard skills will be really valuable
  • Listen to lots of music, question what it is that you like about it and pick out the key elements that really appeal to you
  • Take advantage of online resources that will help you develop your knowledge of working with and composing on a Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) – musicians do a lot for themselves these days, and that includes the technical stuff! You can find free software or browser-based DAWs online, such as BandLab, Soundtrap or Garageband – even the simplest software can be used to create music and develop your skills and understanding
  • Try to consider where you would like to end up next – performing, composing, teaching, whatever the case may be, start investigating!

Your course benefits from an enrichment programme planned out by your local campus. Activities we’ve done in the past are guest talks from industry practitioners, opportunities to play at local or national events, field trips and visits, and collaborative projects between students from different courses.

Our bespoke professional development programme aims to empower you to take your next steps into your future career. We achieve this by providing you with a three phase programme of lessons, projects and experiences designed to give you as much exposure to industry as possible.

If you are 16-18 and don’t already have GCSE Grades 4 or above in mathematics and/or English Literature or Language, it will be compulsory for you to do a GCSE level maths and/or English course alongside your studies with us. Learn more here.
