Our Level 3 Games Development course provides in-depth training in game creation using industry-standard tools like Unity3D, Unreal Engine, Blender, and Maya. You’ll develop 3D modelling skills, create game-ready assets, and design 2D games and prototypes. You’ll also focus on creating and animating a 3D character, learning techniques in anatomy modelling, retopology, and clothing. This course equips you with both practical and theoretical knowledge to excel in the game development industry, preparing you for further study or a career in the field.

On the L3 Games Development course, you’ll work with advanced industry tools like Unity3D, Unreal Engine, Blender, and Maya, developing both technical and creative skills to create games from scratch. You’ll gain practical experience in our games labs, learning how to collaborate in teams and independently build games. Additionally, you’ll develop professional presentation skills, pitching your ideas to clients or investors and compiling a portfolio to showcase your work, preparing you for opportunities in the gaming industry.

Prior to your studies commencing you will have the opportunity to purchase a Course Starter Pack containing essential Games Development materials such as a 1TB SSD hard drive and high-quality headphones at a competitive price. 

You’ll also receive access to games development rooms containing:

  • Powerful gaming PCs.
  • Variety of games software (Blender, Maya, Unreal Engine, Quixel Suite, Unity, Construct 3).
  • Meta Quest VR Headsets.
  • Students on this course are assigned an Adobe Creative Cloud licence with access to all applications except Substance.
  • An online learning programme in your first year, to support and enhance your studies.

During your course, you will have access to a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), where you can:

  • View your course information.
  • Set and review targets to help you develop practically and academically.
  • Review notes from your 1-2-1 sessions with your course leader.

Year 1:

  • 13 hours of in-person lessons per week, covering diverse topics in games development.
  • 56 hours of self-directed study (independent learning) across the year.
  • 64 hours of enrichment activities related to the course.
  • Time allocated for developing employability skills through the Professional Development programme.
  • If required, 4 hours of maths and/or 3 hours of English per week for students with a grade 3 or below.

Year 2:

  • 12 hours of in-person lessons per week.
  • 111 hours of self-directed study over the year.
  • 48 hours of enrichment activities.
  • Continued support for employability development.

Professional Development: 

  • Weekly sessions to develop employability skills specific to your chosen discipline.

Attendance and Independent Work:

  • 100% attendance is mandatory for all lessons and timetabled activities.

Students are expected to work independently outside timetabled lessons to:

  • Apply what they learn.
  • Complete assignments.

Progress Reviews and Reporting:

  • At least three one-to-one reviews per year.
  • A formal learner report accessible to parents/carers via the online portal.

Enrichment Opportunities:

  • Creative projects, guest lectures, and events.
  • An online learning programme to support studies outside college hours.

This internally assessed course is delivered and evaluated by teachers through planned projects. These combine practical tasks, like game design and creation, 3D modelling and animation, as well as written reports, filmed pitches, and presentations, involving both individual and group work.

Our bespoke professional development programme aims to empower you to take your next steps into your future career. We achieve this by providing you with a three phase programme of lessons, projects and experiences designed to give you as much exposure to industry as possible.

Those who need to retake maths and/or English due to achieving a grade 3 or below will undertake 4 hours of maths and/or 3 hours of English a week. Learn more here.
