4 GCSEs at 4-9 (C-A*) including English.

This course is made up of carefully scheduled projects, and is internally assessed by your teachers. Projects can involve both individual and group work and are a balance of practical work such as motion graphics, 3D environments, title sequences, 2D and 3D animation/video work and website portfolios; balanced with reports, slides, and presentations. The final submission of each year is a large creative project where you can choose to focus on techniques, styles and outputs of your choice.

Whilst the course teaches you all of the fundamentals and creativity from the ground up, you would benefit from exploring the following before your studies start with us:

  • Practicing with a graphic tablet, if possible.
  • Being able to understand key words within the animation industry (such as key frame, 12 principles and frames per second).
  • Begin developing your drawing skills using the fundamentals of animation by exploring the line of action, character design and anatomy studies.
  • We use most of the Adobe software on both Mac and PCs, but you could try free versions such as Photopea (a free version of Photoshop).
  • We use Maya and Blender in lessons; Blender is a free software you could download and explore to understand 3D approaches.
  • Consider looking into the various forms of animation, such as 3D, Stop Motion (Frame by Frame animation with objects), as well as 2D.
  • Look into independent filmmakers or film festivals you could attend or watch to find new techniques or methods for your own practice. (This could be on YouTube, film of the week or animation festivals).

Your course benefits from an enrichment programme planned out by your local campus. Examples of activities we’ve done in the past are:

  • Live Industry Briefs: Working on real-world projects and tackling industry briefs. Some of these projects may even offer the opportunity for paid work, providing valuable practical experience and a glimpse into the professional world.
  • Gallery and Exhibition Visits: To broaden your artistic horizons and inspire your creativity, your campus organises trips to galleries and exhibitions. These visits offer a chance to explore diverse art forms, gain exposure to different artistic perspectives, and engage with the wider creative community.
  • Competitions: Engaging in competitions can be an exciting way to showcase your skills and talents. Your campus may facilitate participation in design competitions, giving you the chance to challenge yourself, receive recognition for your work, and potentially even win prizes.
  • Industry Guest Speakers: Professionals from the animation and VFX industry are invited as guest speakers to share their expertise, insights, and experiences with you. These sessions provide valuable networking opportunities and give you firsthand knowledge of the industry, its trends, and the various career paths available.
