GCSEs at grades 4-9 (C-A*), including English and maths.

Year 1:

1x 2.5hr paper-based assessment (June)

1x 16.5hr project over 2 weeks (May)

Project is set and marked externally by Pearson and comprises:

  • 5 tasks, some individual and some group work
  • Focus on project planning, management, and presentations
  • You will present work to tutors/clients
  • Portfolio of evidence submitted electronically to the exam board

To prepare for your assessments, you will undergo 2x mock assessments + projects during the year (Dec/Jan and Mar/Apr)

Year 2:

1x 35 hr project over 12 weeks (February-May)

Project is set by Pearson and marked internally, and comprises:

  • 7 tasks; mostly individual work with some collaboration needed for research gathering
  • Expansion on year 1 ESP project requirements (i.e. planning and managing a project) + creating and presenting required content
  • You will present and negotiate with tutors/clients
  • Portfolio of evidence is submitted electronically to the exam board

You will have PC access for all projects but not for paper-based assessments unless you have an Examinations Access Agreement (EAA).

While specific requirements are not necessary, you could (at home, and/or in school):

  • Develop your photographic skills. Try this just by getting out with your mobile phone or camera, or even using it at home or with friends to take some snaps.
  • Understand graphic design principles. Gain a basic understanding of graphic design principles, including layout, composition, colour theory, typography, and visual hierarchy; this knowledge will provide a solid foundation for your future design projects.
  • Practice drawing skills. Enhance your drawing skills, as drawing forms the basis of many design concepts. Practice sketching, shading, and perspective drawing to improve your ability to communicate visually.
  • Develop and maintain basic computer skills. Familiarise yourself with operating systems such as Windows and macOS. Understand file management, navigating folders, and using common software applications.
  • Develop software proficiency. You will be using software such as Adobe Creative Suite (including Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign). You will get free access to the Adobe Suite, so don’t invest in it unless you want to, but you can explore their basic features, tools, and capabilities by watching YouTube tutorials. There are free versions of software you could try, such as Photopea (a free version of Photoshop), HitFilm, iMovie etc.
  • Conduct research to find inspiration. Watch lots of filmed media, and think about what types of shots, lighting, and location sounds are used, how they create particular atmospheres and support different styles and purposes of film and video. Read material on film, video, photography and design – both theory and practice – to help you understand relevant creative media terminology. Explore graphic design trends, styles, and influential designers, and look for inspiration in various sources such as books, magazines, websites, and social media platforms to broaden your design perspective.
  • Guest Speakers: industry professionals to share their insights, experiences, and advice.
  • Industry Workshops and Masterclasses: Offering sessions on advanced topics such as cinematography, sound design, virtual reality, and advanced editing techniques.
  • Networking Events: Locally hosted job and careers fairs focused on connecting learners with job and internship opportunities.
  • Creative Collaboration: Work with learners from other disciplines, such as music performance, games, and graphic design, to create multidisciplinary projects.

Our bespoke professional development programme aims to empower you to take your next steps into your future career. We achieve this by providing you with a three phase programme of lessons, projects and experiences designed to give you as much exposure to industry as possible.
