4 GCSEs at 4-9 (C-A*) including English.

This course is internally assessed, meaning and is made up of carefully scheduled projects and coursework that teachers deliver and assess. Projects can involve both individual and group work and are a balance of practical work like photography, edited images, film and video projects; with written reports, slides, and presentations. The final submission of each year is a large creative project where you can choose to focus on techniques, styles and outputs of your choice.

Pre-course study is not a requirement, but you could choose to explore the following before your studies start with us:

  • Read material on film, video and photography – both theory or practice. This will help you to understand relevant creative media terminology
  • Begin developing your photographic skills by getting out with your mobile phone or camera, or even using it at home or with friends to take some snaps
  • Look at some photography and film editing software tutorials online and consider giving editing a try. We use the Adobe Suite on both Macs and PC’s, but free versions you could try would be Photopea (a free version of Photoshop), HitFilm, iMovie etc.
  • Start following photographers on social media and discover which photographers you like, thinking about what you like and why
  • Watch lots of movies and think about what types of shots, lighting, and location sounds are used, especially how they create particular atmospheres and support different styles of film and video.
  • Read lots of film reviews
  • Look into independent filmmakers or film festivals you could attend or watch to find new techniques or methods for your own practice.
  • Join local film and photography clubs

Your course benefits from an enrichment programme planned out by your local campus. Activities we’ve done in the past include:

  • Exhibition coach trips
  • Visits from guest speakers and practical workshop providers
  • Visits to local Higher Education establishments
  • Critiquing sessions from inspirational practitioners
  • Free cinema tickets
  • Work experience offers with various companies local to your college
