course overview

The Level 2 Games Development course, taught in high-tech facilities by experienced staff, is designed to give you the best possible start on your games development journey. We provide a wide-ranging taste of working as a game designer and creator in a highly creative and supportive learning environment. The focus is on expanding and developing your games skills; you will be given a solid foundation in a range of game-related disciplines, and choose the areas in which you really wish to improve, allowing you to advance further in your studies and make a truly informed decision about your next steps.

This one year course provides an introduction to the world of games development, through experimentation and exploration, hands-on learning and constructive feedback. Develop your games design and development skills, such as using game engines and mechanics, how to create 3D models, how to use digital software to design and develop games ideas, and how to create animations.
  • Undertake a variety of activities and projects that challenge you to apply your games knowledge and skills in practical projects.
  • Develop both your technical and academic skills so you can progress onto level 3 study if you wish, and become more employment-ready.
  • Learn about the games industry and what is needed to succeed, then highlight and develop the skills you need to make progress in your chosen field through completing a personal progression project.

As well as your games lessons, you will work with teachers to learn more about your health and wellbeing, to prepare you for your next steps in life and education.

This course allows you a safe space to experiment with techniques and approaches in order to improve, without fear of failure. By actively participating in hands-on tasks and projects, you will refine your practical skills and learn to effectively utilise industry-standard games development software and tools. You will learn to respond to creative briefs, becoming confident in creating work in a range of creative media disciplines and leave the course feeling confident in your creativity, your skills and your next steps. The course develops transferable skills that support progression into diverse and related industries, which include the media, art and IT sectors. We often employ industry professionals as teachers to ensure that we teach current industry practices.

  • You will spend time each week developing your employability skills through our Professional Development programme and your personal health and wellbeing in Personal Development lessons.
  • There is also an expectation that you spend some time outside of your timetabled lessons on applying what you learn to complete your project work.
  • Weekly maths and/or English lessons support you to improve if you have a grade 3 or below in either subject
  • Enrichment activities throughout the year give you access to activities such as creative projects, guest lectures and events, enhancing your college experience and developing your skills and knowledge
  • Throughout the year, you will receive at least three one-to-one reviews, and a formal learner report will be accessible by your parents/carer via the portal.

Three or more GCSEs at grade 3 or above, including English (Language or Literature).

This course is internally assessed, meaning your teachers deliver and assess all of your coursework. Games Development Level 2 is currently made up of 7 assignment submissions. Projects are a balance of practical work like game builds, screen-captured playthroughs, designs/artwork, and animations, as well as written reports and presentations.

Your course benefits from an enrichment programme planned out by your local campus. Types of activities we’ve done in the past are games jams with different themes and rewards, and visits from industry specialists.

We will work with you to build your skills from the ground up, and can provide you with all the gear you need, but before you start with us, it would be beneficial for you to:

  • Take advantage of online resources that will help you develop your knowledge of working with and creating games, especially in free, browser-based game-building software such as Construct 3
  • Play a range of games; question what it is that you like about them and pick out the key features that appeal to you
  • Try to consider where you would like to end up next – as an artist, designer, game developer, teacher… Whatever the case may be, start investigating!

Our bespoke professional development programme aims to empower you to take your next steps into your future career. We achieve this by providing you with a three phase programme of lessons, projects and experiences designed to give you as much exposure to industry as possible.

Those who need to retake maths and/or English due to achieving a grade 3 or below will undertake 4 hours of maths and/or 3 hours of English a week. Learn more here.
