additional information

  • We are a creative college, creating a specialist, creative ecosystem. This is enhanced by teachers, support staff and managers with creative backgrounds and experience.
  • There are opportunities for collaboration across creative disciplines.
  • We have developed in house careers and online learning programmes to support, enhance and harness students’ creative skills and abilities.
  • We cover a range of disciplines and outputs whilst still allowing students to determine and develop their own creative outputs.
You will benefit from a balanced programme of study that combines practical sessions in specialist spaces, contextual studies in classrooms, independent study which you can undertake in college or at home, and enrichment activities which enhance your college experience – things such as trips, visits, guest speakers and events. On most courses, you will share some lessons with peers from different pathways, allowing you to rub shoulders and collaborate!  Throughout both years of the course, weekly in-person lessons cover a range of topics in Games Development. In addition, in Year 1:

  • Our bespoke Games Development online course delivers additional skills and knowledge to develop you as a games dev and can be completed at a time and place in the week that works best for you
  • Enrichment activities throughout the year enhance your college experience and develop your skills and knowledge
  • Our Professional Development programme develops key employability skills and puts them into practice through short, independent projects
  • Weekly maths and/or English lessons support you to improve if you have a Grade 3 or below in either subject

And in Year 2:
  • You plan and complete independent study hours to independently complete project work, preparing you for the world of employment or higher education
  • Continued enrichment activities enhance your experience and provide more opportunities to engage with industry and employers
  • Continued focus on Professional Development lessons supports you as you look to the future

4 GCSEs at 9-4 (A*-C), including English.

This course is internally assessed, meaning your teachers deliver and assess all of your coursework and is made up of carefully scheduled projects. Projects can involve both individual and group work and are a balance of practical work like game design, development and creation using engines (which includes designing parts or whole games, as well as creating the games with industry standard tools); game asset creation; 3D modelling and animation; as well as reports, filmed pitches and presentations.

Your course benefits from an enrichment programme planned out by your local campus. The types of activities we’ve done in the past are:

  • Games jams with different themes and rewards.
  • Visits from Industry Specialists
  • Masterclasses
  • 3D modelling competitions and 3D printing workshops

We can teach you the skills and knowledge you need, regardless of your experience. However, before you join, it would be useful to gain some experience in the following:

  • Good knowledge of using a computer (for creating games we use Windows PCs)
  • Practising using a game engine software to create an environment, and/or create simple interactive elements. Both Unity and Unreal Engine are free to download, and there is a vast amount of online tutorials on YouTube that can help you get to grips with the basics of both.
  • Practice using 3D modelling software. The software you will be using on the course is MAYA. However, it is quite expensive, so you may wish to download Blender; this is good 3D modelling software, will introduce you to the basic principles of 3D modelling, and is free to use (you can even download it from Steam).
  • Consider playing a wider range of games than you normally would, particularly if you don’t play any indie games. Move out of your comfort zone in terms of games you play, and experiment with different ideas to see how many different ways mechanics and different art styles can be used to create video games.
  • Research into some of your favourite game development companies and find out how their company started, and what they are looking for in their employees.

Owning a Windows computer or laptop isn’t essential, but it would benefit you in your studies.

Our bespoke professional development programme aims to empower you to take your next steps into your future career. We achieve this by providing you with a three phase programme of lessons, projects and experiences designed to give you as much exposure to industry as possible.

Those who need to retake maths and/or English due to achieving a grade 3 or below will undertake 4 hours of maths and/or 3 hours of English a week. Learn more here.
