What is music production?
Music production is the process of creating, recording, arranging, and refining music. It involves various stages, including composing melodies, writing lyrics, recording instruments and vocals, mixing tracks to balance audio elements, and mastering the final version for distribution. Producers often collaborate with artists and other professionals to shape the sound and style of a track to ensure it meets creative and commercial goals.
We caught up with current ACC Birmingham Level 3 Music Production student, Ary Rehman-Jackson, on how studying this course has helped to refine him as a musician and given him some amazing opportunities to grow and develop as an artist:
Hey Ary, nice to meet you, please can you tell us a bit about yourself?
I’m Ary, I study at ACC Birmingham and I’ve always loved music from a very young age. When I finished my GCSEs it was obvious that I would do a course related to my love of music. We went to visit a few colleges on their open days, but as soon as I saw ACC, I knew straight away that this was the place I really wanted to be.
That’s good to hear! What would you say was the inspiration behind your musical journey?
Apparently I was singing before I was even talking! I’ve always found it very easy to memorise songs and have been interested in music all of my life.
My first set of mixing decks were a toy model when I was a toddler! Later on, when I was at primary school, I got my first proper mixing deck and used to have parties for my family. I was invited to Capital Radio and Heart FM several times, this made me want to be a DJ even more. I was part of a music school and got the opportunity to perform on stage several times, including once at a festival in front of thousands of people.
My siblings and I also won a competition for performing a song from Frozen in a talent competition. It was a combination of all of these factors which made me realise I wanted to learn how to make my own music, especially after spending all my life listening to DJs, like Calvin Harris.
How do you find studying at ACC Birmingham?
I absolutely love everything and everyone at ACC, I couldn’t be happier! I find the course really interesting and it’s helped me to develop so much as an artist. The staff are very helpful and knowledgeable and they go above and beyond to help me achieve my goals.
I’m very proud and feel lucky to be studying at ACC, not just because everyone here is amazing, but because they are all professionals in the fields they have specialised in and I get to benefit from their expertise. The staff strive to help students achieve what they have. I feel that I will leave ACC with so much knowledge and experience compared to if I had gone to a college without such a helpful environment.
ACC has given me the opportunity to perform on several occasions, I don’t think I would’ve had the same experience elsewhere. The college has a lovely atmosphere, where not just staff, but other students encourage and support each other irrespective of which course they are studying.
We’re so pleased you’ve enjoyed studying with us. What would you say has been your career highlight so far?
I really loved performing at Camp Bestival. It was amazing performing my own song in front of thousands of people who were all cheering for me. The manager said he is expecting me to have more songs for this year’s Camp Bestival, this is encouraging me to create some more bangers!
I enjoyed performing my song at The Mill with my friend, Faye, in front of all the staff and students from ACC and all my family, grandparents and cousins who had come to watch. It made me feel really proud. It was such a highlight publishing my song on platforms, such as Spotify, having used it to listen to other people’s songs all these years.
That sounds amazing! What do you see yourself doing after you finish studying at ACC?
I have lots of ambitions, including doing a degree in music production, working at ACC and performing at venues like Wembley. Watch out Calvin Harris!
Do you think there are any benefits to being a student ambassador?
I was very happy to be selected as a student ambassador because it gives me the opportunity to do open days and taster days so that I can share my passion for the course and love for the college!
What advice would you give to future students who are thinking about joining ACC?
Don’t think twice about it, just do it! It doesn’t matter what your level of experience is or your confidence because ACC will turn you into a professional in no time, whatever the course.
Watch this space! At ACC, we encourage future musicians, like Ary, to grow and reach their full potential.
