course overview

Got a game in your head that you’re desperate to make real? Our Level 4 Indie Games Development course is where you build the skills to actually do it.

Indie Games Development is about taking full ownership of your creative journey, from the first line of code to the final launch. You’ll set your own development goals, get hands-on with game engine coding and 3D modelling, and learn to manage a production pipeline like a pro. That means understanding how to scope a project properly, so your ideas turn into finished, playable games.
We don’t stop at the making. We’ll teach you how to brand, promote, pitch and launch your work too, so when you’re ready to put your game in front of the world, you know exactly how to do it.

By the end of this course, you’ll be able to:

  • Set and manage your own creative development goals, and track your progress like an indie professional would
  • Code within game engines and build your own 3D models, giving you the technical foundation to bring your ideas to life
  • Scope projects realistically, so you finish what you start
  • Critically evaluate your own work and use that feedback to improve
  • Build a brand around your game, and pitch, promote and launch it to a real, global audience

You’ll spend this year in the driving seat. Rather than following someone else’s brief, you’ll be setting your own goals and building the self-management skills that every indie developer relies on. Expect hands-on studio time, 1:1 guidance from our tutors who know the industry, and honest, constructive feedback that helps you get better with every project.

PLEASE NOTE: THE BELOW STUDY MATERIALS ARE CAMPUS DEPENDENT.

In college, you will have access to Game Development rooms containing:

  • Powerful gaming PCs
  • Variety of games software (Blender, Maya, Unreal Engine, Quixel Suite, Unity, Construct 3)
  • Meta Quest VR Headsets
  • Students on this course are assigned an Adobe Creative Cloud licence with access to all applications except Substance.
  • An online learning programme in your first year, to support and enhance your studies.

A Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) allowing you to:

  • View course information
  • Access resources for your lessons, to help you understand and complete projects and assignments
  • View your timetable and check your attendance
  • Submit your work and receive your grades
  • Set and review targets to help you develop artistically and academically
  • Review the notes from your 1:1 reviews
  • Access online resources and learning programmes

We also provide a parent portal, which allows parents/carers to support you with your progress.

additional information

  • We are a creative college, creating a specialist, creative ecosystem. This is enhanced by teachers, support staff and managers with creative backgrounds and experience.
  • There are opportunities for collaboration across creative disciplines.
  • We have developed in-house careers and online learning programmes to support, enhance and harness students’ creative skills and abilities.
  • We cover a range of disciplines and outputs whilst still allowing students to determine and develop their own creative outputs

You’ll benefit from a balanced programme of study that combines practical sessions in specialist spaces, contextual studies in classrooms, independent study which you can undertake in college or at home, and enrichment activities which enhance your college experience – things such as trips, visits, guest speakers and events. You’ll also share some lessons with students from other pathways, giving you the chance to collaborate and pick up perspectives outside your own discipline.

Throughout the course, weekly in-person lessons cover game engine coding, 3D modelling, and production pipeline management. Alongside this:

  • You plan and complete independent study hours to manage your own creative development goals and take real ownership of project work – a core skill for anyone heading into the indie games industry
  • Enrichment activities throughout the year enhance your college experience and connect you with industry and employers
  • Our Professional Development programme builds key employability skills – including branding, promotion, pitching and launching, and puts them into practice through your own projects
  • You’ll work towards a finished, playable piece of work, learning to scope and manage a project the way a working indie developer would

You must be 17+ and have a Level 3 qualification at Merit grade (or equivalent), GCSE English (Language or Literature) at Grade 4 or above (or equivalent), and be able to demonstrate creative development work in games-related areas to a suitable level.

The year is currently made up of four projects, undertaken in order:

  • Retrospect Project
  • Production Plan Project
  • Showcase Portfolio
  • Evaluations and Career Action Plan

Every project pushes your skills further, sharpening your industry skills, understanding and branding, and helping you quickly develop in line with professional standards and expectations.
Alongside this, you’ll keep sharpening your games development skills, working on a single, complete game project which you’ll finish and polish to a professional standard – ready to take with you into your next steps in the indie games world.
Each of these projects counts towards your final grade of Pass, Merit, or Distinction.

Your course benefits from an enrichment programme planned out by your local campus. The types of activities we’ve done in the past are:

  • Lead Games Jams with different themes and rewards, developing the skills needed to lead a small studio
  • Visits from Industry Specialists
  • Masterclasses
  • 3D modelling competitions and
  • 3D printing workshops

We can teach you the skills and knowledge you need, regardless of your experience. However, before you join, it would be useful to gain some experience in the following:

  • Good knowledge of using a computer (for creating games we use Windows PCs)
  • Practising using a game engine software to create an environment, and/or create simple interactive elements.
  • Both Unity and Unreal Engine are free to download, and there is a vast amount of online tutorials on YouTube that can help you get to grips with the basics of both.
  • Practice using 3D modelling software. The software you will be using on the course is MAYA. However, it is quite expensive, so you may wish to download Blender; this is good 3D modelling software, will introduce you to the basic principles of 3D modelling, and is free to use (you can even download it from Steam).
  • Consider playing a wider range of games than you normally would, particularly if you don’t play any indie games. Move out of your comfort zone in terms of games you play, and experiment with different ideas to see how many different ways mechanics and different art styles can be used to create video games.
  • Research into some of your favourite game development companies and find out how their company started, and what they are looking for in their employees.

Owning a Windows computer or laptop isn’t essential, but it would benefit you in your studies.
