course overview

T Level Software Development is an exciting and practical course for budding programmers and developers that will help you get started in the digital and tech industries.

The course works through the entire software development process, from building your problem-solving and programming skills using Python and modern web technologies, to understanding and using emerging technologies like AI, along with learning in-demand business-critical skills such as data analysis, network infrastructure, and cybersecurity.

During the course, you will also spend 45 days on an industry placement working with a local digital company and their software developers on a real-world project.

On completion, you’ll have the skills and experience to either go on to university, directly into industry, or onto an apprenticeship.

In year one of the course, you will:
  • Build your programming skills in practical sessions by working on a series of portfolio projects using different languages, including Python.
  • Prepare for year one exams in theory sessions, covering everything from data analysis and network infrastructure to ethical AI and cybersecurity!
  • Prepare for your industry placements by building your critical thinking and interview skills and expanding your wider digital abilities.

In year two, you will:
  • Create larger and more advanced programs for your portfolio.
  • Complete a large exam project that will bring together all the practical and theory skills you’ve built over the course so far.
  • You will benefit from a balanced programme of study that combines practical sessions in specialist spaces with contextual studies in classrooms.
  • Your academic year will run for 37 weeks. Lessons cover a variety of subjects in your chosen discipline
  • Online sessions allow you to develop skills and understanding further whilst accessing lessons with peers from our sites around the country
  • Enrichment activities throughout the year, such as creative projects, guest lectures and events, enhance your college experience and develop your skills and knowledge
  • Our Professional Development programme develops key employability skills and puts them into practice
  • T Level Software Development also includes specialist sessions devoted to exam readiness
  • There is an expectation that you work outside of your timetabled lessons on both applying what you learn to grow and develop, and completing your assignments.
  • As part of the course, you’ll have access to our high-spec computers filled with industry-standard software for programming and deploying applications, along with networking and cybersecurity tools. You’ll also have the opportunity to study for an Amazon Web Services certification.
  • Everything on your timetable is mandatory, and we expect 100% attendance on all of our courses.

Across each year, you will receive at least three one-to-one reviews, and a formal learner report will be accessible to your parents/carer via the portal.

PLEASE NOTE: THE BELOW STUDY MATERIALS ARE CAMPUS DEPENDENT.

additional information

  • We are a creative and technical-focused college, creating a specialist ecosystem for computing students. This is enhanced by teachers, support staff and managers with creative backgrounds and experience.
  • There are opportunities for collaboration across creative disciplines for example photo and video shoots for musicians, or writing music for video games.
  • We have developed in house careers and online learning programmes to support, enhance and harness students’ creative skills and abilities.
  • We cover a range of disciplines and outputs whilst still allowing students to determine and develop their own creative outputs.

GCSEs at grades 4-9 (C-A*), including English and maths.

Year 1:
  • 2x 2hr 15m paper-based exams (60% core grade)
  • 1x 14.5 hr project over 2 weeks (40% core grade)

Year 2:
  • 1x 50.5 hr project over 7 weeks (100% os grade)

Over both years you will undertake mocks to prepare you for the final exams and also complete a series of projects that will be internally assessed by your tutors. Students will have PC access for all projects but not for paper-based assessments unless you have an EAA (exam access arrangements).

Your course benefits from an enrichment programme planned out by your local campus. Activities we’ve done in the past are:

  • Guest speakers from professionals across the industry
  • Trips and visits to technology trade shows and other relevant local events
  • Opportunities to undertake live projects from national companies outside of industry placement

While a GCSE/L2 qualification in IT/Digital/Computer Science isn’t a requirement of the course, it will help!

Spend some preparatory time learning at least some basic Python programming and general terms such as variables, functions, sequence, selection, iteration etc. Online resources such as www.learnpython.org have some great basic tutorials that will help.

Our bespoke professional development programme aims to empower you to take your next steps into your future career. We achieve this by providing you with a three phase programme of lessons, projects and experiences designed to give you as much exposure to industry as possible.
