Free Level 3 courses for school leavers
Education is important, and everyone deserves an equal opportunity to access it. The government is committed to helping young people access high-quality further education without the burden of rising debts.
You can study a Level 3 course for free as long as you meet the following criteria:
- You should be between 16-18 years old.
- You must be a UK citizen, or you’re a migrant with settled status.
- You can’t have a Level 3 qualification already.
Also there are some exceptions for those who are over 19 and already have a Level 3 qualification, as outlined below:
- You may already have a Level 3 qualification or higher, but earn below the National Living Wage annually (£20,319 from April 2023)
- You already have a Level 3 qualification or higher, but are unemployed.
Finally, you can’t have previously completed the same course and want to redo it.
Free level 3 courses for over 19s
If you are over 19 years old and want to study a Level 3 or Level 4 course, you may be able to get an Advanced Learner Loan to pay for it.
Many students aged 19 and over will qualify for these loans from the UK Government. It’s easy to apply, your household income isn’t taken into account and there’s no credit check. You won’t have to pay anything back until your income is over the repayment threshold.

To access free Level 3 courses, you must first find a college that offers them. After that you would then submit your application, providing your personal information and details that align with the funding criteria.
